- The Lou Brock Award for Leading the National League in Stolen Bases
Lou Brock
The National League has tracked the stolen base as an official statistic since 1886. It took until 1978, however, for the league to create an official post-season performance award for leading the league in stolen bases. The award was named in honor of Lou Brock while he was still an active player. Brock retired in 1979 as the single-season stolen base leader (118) and the career leader (938). While Brock has relinquished each of the all-time awards to Rickey Henderson, Brock remains the all-time leader for stolen bases in the National League. The Lou Brock Award is an official Major League Baseball post-season award and the honor is exclusively presented at the St. Louis Baseball Writers’ Dinner to the annual winner.

Red Schoendienst has been in a professional baseball uniform as either a Hall of Fame player, a World Series-winning manager, coach or advisor to senior management for over 70 years. Other personalities may have received more national recognition but few in the history of the game have given more of themselves to benefit so many individuals and organizations than Red Schoendienst. He remains an invaluable component of the St. Louis Cardinals organization and without his countless contributions over the past seven decades, modern professional baseball history in St. Louis would be very different.
The Red Schoendienst Medal was created to honor other men and women in the game of baseball who, like Red, have made incredible, invaluable and magnificent contributions to the National Pastime.
This new award commemorates the quintessential Cardinal and one of the most valued, yet one of the most humble, individuals in the history of the organization. The “Red Medal” is the highest off-field honor bestowed by the St. Louis Chapter of the BBWAA.
